RipTV video show demo
October 12, 2006Published by radekSo I heard from some secret source (ok, it was from me) that if you go to RipTV now, you can view some of the shows they are working on. RipTV is running a test on some of their video players and servers so they have their shows live!

View Who Faved thisThe Cyrus show is HILARIOUS. Dylan still rules.
Wow that ability to really interact with the show that is playing is so sweet. For once you can figure out what the music that's playing is and its nice to be able to link to the site the news lady was talking about at the given moment. What do you guys think of all this?
this is probably the best thing that has ever came 2 the internet!! I ABSOLUTLY HANDS DOWN find this the best action sports site on the face of this earth!!!! PROPS
Kicks Ass! Obviously you guys have been working hard on RIP. It has everything! Great TV, great i-views, great music where to get it! It totally rocks!
Red Bull Elevation was ssssssssweet!
Demo daze
I am not a skater, so don't have much to say in terms of the content. The production values were decent, and the pace seemed good.
However - the rip tv logo is sitting (lower right corner) on top of the names of the skaters so you cant read them....
Not sure if theres a way to do this - but when the commercial launches would be nice to have some kind of indication its coming - like a transition or wipe or something... Having it pop in right in the middle with no indication was a bit jarring - thought something was wrong with the stream. Maybe if you could stream a transition in first, orprepend a transition on the commercial - or perhaps do a 'window resize ' trick - i.e. have the may play window shrink, while the window with the commercial enlarges and takes its place... Something to indicate a change isimmenant and is supposed to be happening...
Cyrus show
I like Cyrus as a host overall - seems to have the appropriate persona/sense of humor etc. although it would take seeing a few epsiodes to be really sure.
From a production standpoint though, the show needs to be a lot tighter - the unstructuredness of it is entertaining to a point, but there were many spots where the pace dropped. In the talk show format (as with standup or sketch) it is critical to keep the pace and energy up, or you lose the viewer.
While I like the informal nature of it compared to normal mainstream talk show offerings, it felt at times a bit too much like a bunch of guys in a living room with webcam. The episode could have been shortened to probably 15 min or so which would have made it punchier and more energetic. This would mean having more rigorous control over the sequence and scripting - likely driven by a producer signaling the host with cues/times, and by spending more time up front getting the guest list structured with relevant discussion subjects and following that more closely.
It strikes me it might be the place to increase the interactivity of things - by drawing the audience in more. The Q/A section had promise but was too short. Why have an audience if you don't use em more? Since riptv is a next generation kind of thing, which seems want to reduce the distance between the audience and the action, getting the audience a lot more involved more would get it fired up a bit more. Not talking about jerry springer style - but something in between conan obrian and jerry. Much music does a decent job at this with some of their interactive segments.
Dj needs to be used more - he kind of seemed to be in at the start and then was sort of left out/off to the side (literally). More music segways etc - and maybe even something retarded like making the guests bust out dance moves or something (a short segment called 'guest dance party' - need one/several go-go girls to dance with them though to make that work a la Livingcolour but scaled down.. )...stupid idea probably - but something like that to get the dood some more screen time.
Rip Tv News:
This was the best overall so far - the production values were very good, the host was quite good - clear concise and the pace was very good. The graphics fit really well, and the integration of the graphics, news etc made it quite engaging. This show really showcased the potential of the integrated links: keying in products/links/more info. I Really wanted to get more info on the Surf kite sailing thing for example - that looked rad. Where to buy em how much they cost, can you rent em etc.
Only thing here is the host will need to pause more to let me have a look at the links section before diving into the next bit so that if I want to fire up a link, I have a few seconds to do it (she would say 'check the link below' and by the time I had even processed the words, she was already into the next bit...wouldn't leave any time for me to grab the mouse...hit pause or hit a link).
Elevation:
Haven't checked it out yet - next on the list...
Home Invasion:
Haven't check it out yet - will giver...
Technical issues:
There is a fair amount of latency on the connections from time clicked to time to play. Kept hitting the buffer. After the first few, I just would start it bufferning, hit pause, then do somethign else until the whole thing had streamed in. Kind of kills the interactivity. Don't want to hack here too much though given things are in beta and likely not fully ramped up yet.
If the servers are getting packed out - some clearer indication of load up would be nice - perhaps an animated logo or something to give the feeling of action/motion/loading. I found myself frequently hitting the play button or clicking the show icon to make sure it was actually firing up. While I did notice small text indicating 'buffering' maybe a graphic of a beer getting chugged...or the rip logo spinning - something clearer indicating its not dead and is buffering...
The playback would occasionally stop with no indication when advertisements cut in. I could get it restarted correctly by hitting the play button.
When shows ended - was not clear what status was - should have some indication of what is going on - for example at end of rip news would put up the Rip TV graphic but it still said buffering - so wasnt sure if something else was coming up or not...Should put end graphics on end of each show to make sure I know its not broken or hung: or maybe have 'RipTV shows over loser Wake up and watch the next one...'
Overall vid quality looked pretty good - could size it up to use most of my screen and sit back on the couch and have no problem reading everything...
Really like the resizing thingy. Think the related content section will need to be bigger - was really hard to tell what the songs/album covers were. I think you should also highlite the one that is currently active in the list as well as displaying it beside the list. Also a hover over showing the name of the band and some basic details in the list would be nice. Give me some general info before I fully click kind of thing.
I suspect as well you will need to split the songs/products/info into 3 different sections instead of with tabs (and flipping the tabs for me) - because I might want to know what song is playing at the same time as checking out products and related info...Or maybe I will be checking out the songs when product pops up that I am interested in, but I don't want to lose the song...
Anyway - excellent work all around for the first beta doods! look forward to seeing more...

Mimo,
Thanks for your detailed feedback and letting us know your thoughts. This is very helpful in making sure what we are developing here is for you and you will all love it! The more detail everyone can give us the better.
Tell everyone you know about Rip.TV and make sure to give us your email so we can alert you when the site goes live with all the features and content...

this is prety dope. im a little confused on the situation but its all good in the hood.
No worries - glad to help out where I can! (I will try putting html markup in here for paragraphs - see if we can avoid the giant text blob..)
Next show:- Red Bull Elevation Show:
I never had the chance to do BMX (unfortunately: always blown away by what these doods can do on those rides..) - but even so - it was very cool seeing all the 'behind the scenes' setup of dirt jumps etc. Gives you a real riders perspective on the show - what goes into building it, what it takes to ride it...I liked the section where the riders were just working on figuring out the tricks. Loved the cut where it went from the side view of the rider to the slow-mo closeup of the dood pulling a superman in the air.. Multiple angle cuts/blend slowmo/fast was wicked. Really brought home the sense of the difficulty and intricacy of the stuff these guys were pulling off! Pace was good - nice blend of rider comments and action.. Only thing I was sorry about was when the episode ended!
When clicking on link to related site - problem is content active sites often fire up sound (redbull being example in this case) - this can be pretty gnarly cause you suddenly have 2 soundtracks running, which messes with the episode viewing. You might want to warn advertisers that in order for the cross-linking to be effective they should provide RipTV with an appropriate landing point that has content that is not disruptive to the vid stream, but is informative to the products etc. If I want to get their vid content, it would also then give me a chance to pause RipTV before navigating into active content sections on the related site...
Again - commercial streaming was good (much smoother tonight - could be my connection is buggered - running tracerts): but needs to be marked with a more clear indicator - there is a small blue indicator that says commercial), but its not very clear.
Between/end of segment in elevation (end of segment) played RIPTv skateboard ad, but then stopped with blue indicator 'buffering' but clearly nothing was going on.. Makes kind of a thunderstorm noise, still says 'buffering' but then just stops.

What is the confusion nofootcan? We're in this together bro. Don't worry about asking dumb questions... There are one at this point.
Home invasion:
Don't really follow the snowboard thing that much personally - but could see where fans of a particular athlete/genre would get a kick out of the show's concept (title of the show is a bit misleading though - was expecting a more 'jackassy' invasion - this was more like 'home visit': not that it was a bad thing, but the title did lead me to expect something more aggressive).
Depsite the fact that I am not a snowboard scene afficianado - Marc was a most interesting character 4 sure...Kept my interest thoroughly through the whole segment.
Pretty good balance of info about the athlete vs. watching what they accomplished (i.e. footage of them in action) - maybe a bit more action footage required to really pump it up - but Marc was charismatic enough and had interesting banter to keep the pace flowing. Likely will depend on the personality of the athlete in the case of this show.
Transition into the Ad in this one was particularly sharp/rough/bumpy? - Marc says 'Thats a lot of crap' and then the ad starts.. Shows a potential issue - if an advert pops up at an 'unfortunate' spot in the segment...Could cast the ad in the wrong light, making the advertiser unhappy.
For some reason - this one ended better than the others in the sense that the door closed, and the 'buffering' message didn't come up, so it was pretty clear the show was over...
Perhaps you could cut to a loop with RIP logo and some options on it?? - like say 'check out products, watch again, select new show??' Then I know what my options are...
Last one 4 now (guess my HTML markup trick failed - code injection prevention works, but it leaves you poor buggers to read large text blobs. Muahhahah!..)
Props to all the RipTV staff, production crew, coders, designers, 3d animators, personalities, guests, athletes, ... Stay rad! mimo ooot...

I'll post some great feedback that was emailed to me from Freesport Management Australia (thanks very much!):
I tried to post this - but I am having some real issues with my Pinkbike login
Big Props guys! Take it from someone who spent 6 months working for BigPond (our biggest ISP here in OZ) trying to set up something similar here in Australia - what you have done so far even in Beta form is impressive and I am sure will grow.
The production is good, but like Mimo, I thought the Cyrus show lacked a little in terms of flow. I really found myself liking the home invasion - mostly because I am a bit of a fan of putting a human face on some of the stars of our sports. Other sports do it, yet for so long lifestyle sports athletes have been little more than photos or video images of action.
The real issue we found with BigPond was that they wanted loads of live footage - which is bloody hard and costly even for mainstream sport. Add in the locations of some of our events and it goes from bad to worse. The technology is there to do it with surprisingly high resolution feeds, but it is a hassle. I mention this only because if you don't go live eventually someone else will and it has proven amazingly successful with the ASP feeds from their events. If you ever want a bunch of tech babble on Portable satellite terminals - I have accumulated more crap than I care to think about.
What I really liked was the revenue model. It is simple and relevant, which is why it will work. I think Mimo has covered a lot of the editing issues I would probably have raised, so not a lot more to say. Some are going to argue that the content is replicated elsewhere - but by adding your own content, even if it is not high action content, you differentiate yourselves really well. Freecaster may be about to become very, very worried.
I hope this site grows into what I envisaged three years ago - as it could be the start of something really good and worthwhile in this segment of sport (that is if you don't get bought by Murdoch and it becomes just a gigantic corporate wank...
Heck if I win the lotto tonight I"LL call you!

715-784-8965 (haha - just joking, don't call that number it's made up)
Money would be good though... We have stacks of plans for RipTV and this first little tiny sample of video is just to give everyone an idea about the different sports we cover in the different styles from mostly action to mostly goofing around and putting a personailty to the athletes.
We're loving the feedback. This has been a great excercise and has us stoked to launch Rip!

Great job guys. That shits way better then watching TV. I have to say the Cyrus show was a bit long. I don't have that kind of attention span for watching guys talk shit. The Elevation coverage was some of the best stuff i've seen. Great to see the event from the behind. Between you guys runnin this and Mike and his crew putting up Stund we're loaded with free quality vids on the net now. Thanx for doin what you do, i love watching guys make something out of nothing......

Elevation blew my mind! I hate skating so the skate did nothing for me.
