Google and Pinkbike Video Ad Solution

Posted: Jan 7, 2008

Late last year, myself and Karl went down to the Google Plex in Mountain View California to partner and take part in what will be the next video revolution.
Since then we've been working hard and with Google's help we bring you something new and innovative. I invite you now to see the debut of a new Pinkbike video player advertising solution for producers and riders.

One of the holy grails of video on the web is how does a producer monetize the hard work put in to create content. Some websites offer pre-roll ads and other intrusive forms of advertising that we all hate when trying to watch a video. Of course users are happiest with no advertising.

So is there a perfect balance? I think so.

How does it all work?

1. As a video producer or just someone with a camera, you shoot and edit footage. After creating your video, you upload it to your pinkbike video channels.
2. The pinkbike video player will display unobtrusive and contextually relavant advertising to users watching your video. If users choose to watch and click on the advertising, you as the content owner will get a portion of the ad revenue.
3. The next phase of this program will expand to monetization when your pinkbike video player is embedded on other video websites. Details to come.

What you are about to see is the first cut at integration of ads into your channels and the pinkbike video player. In the next few weeks we want your help to fine tune some of the timing and display location and sizes of the advertising, at which point we will roll out the revenue sharing.

Contextual Ad Demo
- Ads start 10 seconds in.
- Users have the option to close ads.
- Users can scroll through ads to find more relevant ads.

RichMedia Ad Demo
- Ads start 10 seconds in.
- Users have the option to close ads.
- Users can choose to view overlay video or other rich media.

How can you help?

1. As a pinkbike user, make sure that your video description is informative and relevant to the content of the video. This will ensure that the ads displayed are relavent.
2. Only upload content that you are the owner of. All copyrighted material will be promptly deleted.
3. Upload your videos in high quality. (recommended 3Mbps h264 compression) It will take longer to upload but the final quality will be better.
4. All high quality uploads will be available on pinkbike in even better quality in the months to come. When the new flash player comes out of beta, high quality uploads will be viewable in pristine h264.

Ok, If I read correctly, when you upload a video to pinkbike in the future after this is all ironed out. The guy who made the video along with pinkbike will be payed by google for them to run advertisements in them? How is this going to work? And how do I receive this money, lolRazz

as long as the ads do not affect the playback quality of the video i have no problem with it, if the ads disturb video quality or sounds or anything of that nature, it might get a little annoying...

Ya this pretty much kicks ass compared to ads that take over the first few seconds of the video in the beginning or end of a video. I like that I don't feel like my video watching experience is being taken over/interrupted by ads that take up the whole player. Looking forward to hearing what the next step will bring to all the producers out there.

bikerdude,
it may seem like a bad idea to you, but if you understood some of the other systems of people putting advertisments in there videos you would think this is genious. For instance, some websites will stop your movie, and play a 15 second pre roll clip for there site, then being your movie again.
way to break the fun Frown

And your viewing experience is taking a portion of the Pinkbike server load, and a portion of the dude's time who did made the film. Why not click and give a little back for your free experience! Wink

Try and make paypal an option for when you are paying the money out because otherwise you have to wait for checks to clear from google (or google could start up a service similar to paypal that could be linked to a bank account)

Excellent development! Of the two above options, I think the Rich Media advertising demo has more to offer to advertisers and consumers alike without hindering watchability, so my vote goes to that style of advertising. It seems to stand out more without taking anything away. Kudos!!
