NYPD Police Officer Who Shoved a Bicyclist Fired!

Posted: Mar 12, 2009

A police officer who was videotaped knocking a man off his bicycle and onto the ground during a cycling event in Manhattan last summer has been fired, the Police Department said.

Watch the brutal home video for all the proof needed.

Paul J. Browne, the Police Department’s chief spokesman, said the officer, Patrick Pogan, 23, was fired about 10 days ago.

The shoving incident, which gained widespread attention after it was videotaped...

Stuart London, a lawyer for Mr.Pogan, disputed the Police Department’s statement, saying that he had resigned.

Mr. Pogan was accused last year of assault and of filing false paperwork related to the arrest of the cyclist and was suspended from the department. The Manhattan district attorney’s office dropped the charges — attempted assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct — against the cyclist, Christopher Long.

Mr. Browne said on Thursday that the firing stemmed directly from the events involving Mr. Long, which took place on July 25 during a monthly event known as Critical Mass, in which hundreds of cyclists ride through the city to advocate nonpolluting forms of transportation.

The termination was reported by The Associated Press on Thursday night.

“They make errors all the time,” Mr. London said of the Police Department’s assertion that Mr. Pogan had been fired. Mr. Pogan resigned “to concentrate his efforts on fighting the criminal charges that are against him,” Mr. London said, “so that when he is ultimately acquitted he can re-apply to the Police Department.” The shoving incident, which gained widespread attention after it was videotaped and posted on YouTube, embarrassed the Police Department. The video has been viewed on YouTube nearly 2 million times.

dude mackm do you even know what critical mass is, and how they act? I bet he got tired of the shit, the spitting, throwing of stuff towards him and acted out. Even though it was wrong for the cop, I can't blame him. You can only take so much shit. Critical mass has proven to be a major problem. Its not their cause thats the problem, its how the people act on their bikes, what they say to the other peds walking around, and how THEY provoke most of the stuff.

Like what dinkboy said, this just brings bikers a bad name, not just the cops. WHEN PEOPLE IN CRITICAL MASS CAN SHUT THEIR MOUTH, STOP CUSSING, STOP SPITTING AT PEOPLE AND THROWING STUFF, IT WILL BE FINE. Until then its just lil kid mentality trying to get a point across. If they did it in a mature way, they might actually have more of an audience and get people to listen. Not all critical mass people are guilty, but a lot are.

Yeah cause this is the ONLY cop out there who's an a*shole...

Sorry, but I'm tired of all the pork lovers who try to defend the cops. How many times do we need to see a cop shoot a kid with a cell phone or beat a housewife for speeding or do something like this before you realize that ALL COPS ARE a*sholeS... MAYBE SOME are cool in certain situations but the basic psychological profile of an individual which seeks out the power and controll associated with a job in law enforcement matches nearly exactly the profile of those who should NEVER be given that kind of power or control. This is just more proof of that.

flag dookiepro (Mar 13, 2009 at 2:01)
I'm sure dealing with the scum of the earth day after day would have a negative affect on you as well. I would also bet that you believe everyone should have weapons, and police themselves...but that opens a whole new debate.

You shouldn't talk shit about someone and their career until you've worked in the field yourself.
  • + 6
flag triptex (Mar 13, 2009 at 4:13)
It's not the nature of the work that creates these social behaviors as much as the power associated with the job that attracts certain "a*shole" cops.

The must be to some extent a god complex that compels potential embarrassments to join the force. I don understand why the psychological screening doesn't catch this.

Police work isnt the only occupation with these unhealthy steriotypes.. It's just as easy to say that most Doctors carry horrible god complexes and are usually self righteous a*sholes.

Just let it go guys, every single person on this planet is part of one sterotype or another so why are they each so different. Don't get me wrong, I've met a lot of asswad cops, but I've also met a lot of asswad bikers. Just leave it alone and say that this one person did something wrong, not the whole of police around the world.

all my uncles are cops. you should hear the stories they tell at our reunions. f*ck the police.

the guy didnt do anything. and if he did i dont see the need to knock him on his ass. they could have stopped him other ways, he wasnt riding directly at the cop he was going around him. The only time force like that should be used is if the officer is being assaulted or someone is resisting arrest.

to anyone on here who is a cop, wants to be a cop, or is in the process of becoming, I think you suck and i dont care what anyone else thinks about that.

as far as critical mass goes, I dont know much about them but i belive we have a right to assemble in public without being harrassed.
  • + 2
flag Antron (Mar 13, 2009 at 15:26)
I think what you're saying is a little ignorant. There are hundreds of reasons for police to use force. What about it the person is endangering other peoples lives? What if the person is drunk/high and known to be aggressive? As other people have stated, when dealing with the stuff they deal with everyday, they probably start to look down on society, and I probably would to. The fact is, if there were no cops, you would be some gangs bitch. And if you disobeyed them, it would be much worse then what any cop would do to you.

And as for this video, it looks like he may have messed up. I don't see what the biker did wrong, but also if what dinkboy says is true, I don't much care for these bikers.

well that guy did none of those things. if they are going to look down on society for what others do then they should be fired. And if there were no cops i would take my guage to anyone who came within 50 feet of me regardless.
  • + 0
flag Antron (Mar 13, 2009 at 15:39)
Which is why I said that it didn't appear that he did anything wrong. You are no better then them for looking down on them. Which is probably why they are like that. And it doesn't work like that, if you killed a gang member, then that gang would be after you and you would be screwed... anyways there is no sense in getting into that.

flag radek (Mar 13, 2009 at 15:42)
No need to generalize about if all critical mass riders or all cop are good or bad. I'm sure there are great people and bad apples on both sides.
Now in this case, guess what, the cop went in front of the court, based on the evidence he was found guilty. End of story...it's his fault. I'm sure all those little ladies and old men in critical mass rides, on their commuter bikes are a real threat to society and biking. Give me a break.
Cops are paid to deal with adversity and not to take things personally, so are judges. This goes for all of us too. Just because we had a bad example dealing with a cops, or a rider, or a skater, or whatever, should not make us generalize and become closed minded.

In this case, we hate this act because it was done by zealous individual that was pissed off at some other group of people, generalized his previous experience, and acted to hurt someone probably not doing anything wrong. What I read from this is not that cops are bad, but that you get bad apples everywhere, and you can't generalize groups because you may have had one, or even a few bad experiences.

I'm going to be honest here, i know a few cops and they are all really nice people. It seems a bit backward for you to assume anybody who join the police wants power. your just stereotyping a negative view from incidents that very rarely happen. it's like calling americans idiots, of course most americans are not idiots, thats the negative stereotype! I'm in no way condoning this guys actions and to be honest i think he should be prosecuted but let's just remember what these guys deal with on a day to day basis.

"And if there were no cops i would take my guage to anyone who came within 50 feet of me regardless." - do us a favour pal, don't have kids!

Gawd thank you guys! It's good to see other people on here with common sense! That officer got in trouble for his actions so therefore, he is no better than anybody else, and he didn't get away with it because he's a cop.

"it's like calling americans idiots, of course most americans are not idiots, thats the negative stereotype!"
That's a very refreshing thing to here on this site! I can't think of how many times I've been called a "stupid American". Just because our President was an Idiot does not make the entire country stupid! ARG

I agree. normal people don't want to drive around all day with a gun and harass people. That's why police work attracts people that aren't normal, sometimes not in a bad way, but usually. It's usually people who want to have control over people or have some other grandiose superhero-type delusions.
I wrenched with a guy who tried to be a cop but couldn't for some reason.. randomly one day he brought his pistol, a bulletproof vest and handcuffs to work in a duffel bag to show off. This was years after trying to be a cop they were still his most valued posessions. I could tell they made him feel powerful but I was just hoping it wasn't actually a rape kit.

what this post should also convey to people is that the police are not above the law themselves. just because they wear a badge dosnt mean that they can control you or tell you what to do in all situations. the police are answerable to the same laws we are, and all officers should be careful about what they do in public for this reason.
We as civilians have the right to observe the actions of the police on public property. they are after all public servents, our taxes pay their wages.
You can film the police unless its a threat to their safety, which is hardly ever. if a situation does arise where you think the police have stepped over the line a bit, a video like this one will always lead to a good result for you. excessive force, violence, threatening language are all illegal. dont let the cops get away with it.
If the police aproach you and ask you to turn off your camera ask why, and politely say no. Give them no excuse to arrest you, like swearing and being cocky, and you should be fine.
Always remember not to criminalise yourself. You dont have to answer their questions if you think it may cause you to get into trouble. alot of people do this, they admit to a crimes when the cop has evidence and get arrested. sometimes your better off not saying anything!

This is a really happy outcome. First time I saw the video in YouTube I was enraged (I belong with Birmingham Critical Mass). For all that I care, the police are the worst criminals ever to encounter in the whole of the world (as simple as that), so it is better for you if you have no dealings whatsoeve with them. Here I'd like to encourage people to make good friends and don't support the police for whatever it is they might need your help for. The reason being, they are very likely to set you up as they don't mean to "protect" but just to work towards the evidence which will help them in prosecuting you and sending you to prision. Just be weary of these f....* in blue iniforms (they're all loosers and will probably take it out on you).

If you Brits can control your mass' great. In the States it gives people who want to start trouble an excuse too. I could care less about the Cops and Yeah I understand the god complex that they have. I can say I truly hate Critical Mass. Not for their Ideals. But for their execution of their protests and how they take on no responsibility for what people in their Mass' do. If you policed yourself ( you may have to arrest a few of your own) then have at it. Taking over the city streets and in Seattles case when they went onto the freeway and blocked traffic. Tell me why I should show any support for CM? They're not cyclist they're protesters on bikes.

I probably should not have spoken like that, but what about cars overtaking the streets? Did you know that an old lady told me off the other day just because I was riding my bike on the sidewalk. As she was taking it out on me I did explain I was much too worried about cars (they just don't repect you) and that she should not worry because I did not mean to run her over. On the other side of thing, just to say I am impress on your response (it is very mature), for you are only 8 are you not? Take care mate.

I don't know man, sounds more like power of suggestion. That is abuse of his power, but has got to be a reason why he did that, no?
The way people stereotype the police, and automatically being stereotyped by doing so is unbelievable. Sure, some cops are a*sholes, but then again, the most you encounter aren't. Ever thought bout it when you street 'round, that you can trash state property, and more important, hurt people?
Anyway just sayin' that guy is abusing his power, but I'd like to know the reason why he 'stopped' that dude, by smacking him down, before I start throwin around insults and start stereotyping people.
Just a thought that you guys maybe try to do the same, and maybe there wouldn't be such a bad relation between cops and bikers.

Critical mass' arent illegal, cops just dont like them because it slows down traffic. as long as you follow all TRAFFIC laws, nothing can be done. we've been stopped by cops before because people had called in and so the cops went to investigate and they just ask what is going on and if we are obeying traffic laws then nothing can be done.
  • + 0
flag dinkboy (Mar 15, 2009 at 12:06)
critical mass doesn't obey traffic laws. Are you kidding me? I swear to god if you haven't been in a car at an intersection during a criticalAss gathering then your talking out your arse. If any one honks at them for when they're running a red light they mob the vehicle and threaten the occupants. Look at the losers who participate. most of them couldn't afford a car. a bunch of pissed off hippies and students with a mob mentality.
  • + 2
flag Gsnickets (Mar 15, 2009 at 16:15)
critical mass riders break several laws, the most common one is riding to the far right... not in a huge mob, blocking traffic. If you two people were to drive at an extremely slow rate of speed down the road blocking traffic, they could be given tickets. Back when CM first started it had a purpose, and a focus, it was well advertised what was going on... now, not so much. It's a bunch of hipsters that want to stand for something, and unfortunately they go about it in an absolutely horrible way. CM only pisses off more drivers causing them to have a negative reflection of bicyclists. The cop may have been in the wrong to some degree, but the cyclist wasn't exactly in the right either.

critical mass is an embarrassment to the cycling community, and should be viewed as such.
  • + 0
flag giantgl0ryh0le (Mar 15, 2009 at 16:57)
well if people know when CM is then why don't they avoid those certain roads during that time, you don't try to drive over the people in the st.patricks day parade do you?
  • + 1
flag Gsnickets (Mar 15, 2009 at 17:33)
you don't try to run over people during the parade because the road is blocked off, and every single person knows what's going on. CM often times has different routes, and is not posted ANYWHERE telling drivers what is going on, most have absolutely no idea. so, it ends up looking like a bunch of crazy bike nazis riding in the middle of the road just to block traffic and generally just be a*sholes because they're in a group.

flag ICAS (Mar 16, 2009 at 10:17)
Nothing wrong with doing that. It's just that Critical Mass are well known for doing stupid shit all the time that gives themselves a bad rap. Here in Toronto, they decided to do one of their monthly rides down the Gardiner expressway. A freekin highway. It obviously created havoc on the highway but more importantly, someone could have gotten messed up bad. They didn't organize it with the city or anything, they just decided to take a couple hundred ppl on bikes (including young children riding with their dumb ass parents) onto a highway to promote their 'green mode of transportation'

There's lots of good Critical Mass peeps that keep the vision of what they're doing. But there's a lot of them who take it to he opposite extreme & think they own the roads. Those guys are the problem & why Critical Mass gets heat.

not trying to offend you or anything but the majority of the police in England aren't power hungry maniacs who want to throw their weight around - rules about policing in the states are wayy too relaxed - people seem to accept that police are right, and the police think the same way -> they don't question their actions before they carry them out! I think they just need tighter rules and regulations on policing, and a more active approach from citizens to stand up to the police!

The cop was unjustified in doing what he did, and deserved disciplinary action. The crazed and self-righteous cop-hate of most of the previous posters makes you aware of what police have to deal with on a daily basis. These Critical Mass events are plainly and deliberately illegal, and as a cyclist I get a bit pissed whenever I read an article that presents them in glowing fellow-traveler terms. CM is a deliberately polarizing movement aimed at fostering an us-versus-them mentality, and it obviously works, but only at making people hate each other. Be proud, bikers!

you have a blatent disregard for peoples rights to alternative transport. not everyone wants to pollute this planet and drive everywhere. here in the uk critical mass is aimed at getting beter cycle routes in towns and cities and giving priorities to cyclists. congestion is a big problem and you may find that commuters in their cars are the biggest cause of congestion in cities, not cyclists. Critical mass is an effective way to gain awareness of cyclists and alternative means of transport. motorists inconveniance the whole planet by polluting thousands of tonnes of C02 emmisions every year. as a cyclist on this website you should support critical mass. motorists are ignorant bastards like yourself who dont give a shit about anybody else. people like you have had their way for too long and its time for a change.

I have, however, been hauled into the back of a car and grilled for an hour for walking with friends in the middle of the night, and I have been issued speeding tickets for going 2km over, very close to the end of the month and near to quota deadlines...

I know police do a great service and that for the most part we're better off having them, but f*ck, some cops think they've got the hand of God resting on their shoulder. I can tell you one thing, if this ever happened to me I'd gladly take the charges and beating that would ensue if I could just get one solid punch into the face of that as*hat and break a few teeth off.

No one is above the law, and cops don't ever think that in a community, it isn't very hard to find out where someone lives...

I don't know what planet you are from but making a hand gesture at a police officer may well land you in a spot of trouble but it should never 'deserve' an ass whoopen or any other kind of assault, especially not one as severe and deliberate as the one that this unprofessional idiot dished out. The Police are (supposed to be) trained to deal with the odd idiot and need to rise above it regardless of the circumstances. What happens in that video is a flagrant abuse of authority and should never have happened. He did deserve to be sacked for such conduct, no matter how it arose.

Pedestrians have the right of way. Pedestrians have a right to defend themselves if threatened by moving vehicles. The cop started to walk to the sidewalk, possibly to help a little old lady cross, and the biker kept coming knowing full well that a pedestrian is moving on foot, walking and has plenty of time to stop his bike. But the cyclist pulled an illegal move by simply trying to veer haphazardly around the pedestrian.

The cop had every right to defend his position, whether he had a badge or a grocery bag. Just because he was bigger and had good leverage to square up was bad luck for the biker.

If it had been a skinny rookie cop deciding to move to the side, and the cyclist was a 200+lb guy, the cop would have gotten leveled. You wusses have no idea what real brutality is. Don't be sissys and take responsibility.

If you're on your bike, act like you're in a car and do things right. If that cop had walked between cars in that same manner, the car would be expected to stop and be called a murderer. Since it's a skinny guy and a strong cop, you all give skinny boy victim status. Bull.

Last summer in Toronto we had CM and the same thing basically happened.
A cop asked a rider to make way for a car and of course he didn't. It would have been against everything the ride stands for. The cop threw the guy (60 plus) off his bike and went to arrest him. That was until the crowd started to chant 'LET HIM GO LET HIM GO" that cop was also a dick.

If a cop has a bad temper then he shouldn't be involved in events like this. I'm glad he was fired.

Saying "I hate cops" is really, really dumb. Try to imagine life without a police force, the strongest most violent people would rule over everyone else, none of your personal property would be at all safe and rape and murder would be commonplace. The police do a shitty job that could cost them their life on any random day. Yes, this particular cop did something outrageously wrong and stupid, he's probably got an aggressive personality and shouldn't be a cop at all. I know at least one police officer who spends all his free time cycling and is a nice guy with it. Don't blame them all for the poor behaviour of a minority, there are a*sholes in every job and every walk of life.

Don't hate the fuzz for doing their job... but this guy was a douche bag with a badge. Probably kicks puppies and hits his wife and kids too. Bashing the crap out of some single speeder was NOT his job, no matter what the dude was saying or not saying. To Serve and Protect, not to Maim and Intimidate.

The Police do a good job 90% of the time, they help people in need, in trouble and even let you off when you have messed up and need a break. You can never paint all people with the same brush. I have known a number of Cops over the years, 80% were really good dudes... the other 20% were a$$h0le$. Maybe a little higher tard to nice Police, but that is likely because of the type of role they play and the power trippers they attract.

There are a TON of career protesters out there who love $h!t like this, only way they can get off I guess, so be it. The problem is they ruin it for those out there to prove a point. When you have something to say, sometimes you have to say it in a way that really gets the point across. Is a CM event the way? Maybe, maybe not... not for me to say.

In both the US and Canada, we have somewhat of a democracy, and we have rules we live by. In the US and Canada you have the right to protest openly if you follow the rules. Was bike dude following the rules, again hard to say from the vid. All I know is he got friggin creamed BIG time. Then his bike got stolen, fark, what a $hit deal. THEN he got arrested. The whole time with like 5000 people standing by and 1 dude with a camera.

Like Rodney King said... "The next time, if you see me getting beat by the Police, do us ALL a favor, put down the camera and HELP ME"!

Or like the dude who ended up with the Single Speed said.... "hey, free bike"!

sorry, had to
=)

It's easy to say f*ck the police and talk like a rebel. It probably wouldn't be so easy to live without law enforcement. I find it hard to believe that this cop assulted a cyclist for no apparent reason. I may be wrong but alot of people on here have good points about stereotyping. You may think all cops are dicks, but that's the same as someone saying all bikers take up lanes, and all black people are n*ggers. This is ignorance at it's finest.

Wow, how profound. (rolls eyes)

Actually doctors take an oath to do everything in their power to prevent death and cure illness. The years in college are to provide them with the extensive medical knowledge they need to diagnose and treat their patients.

Cops swear to Serve and Protect law abiding citizens and uphold the law of the land. They can only use their firearms when the lives of innocent people or their own lives are threatened.

You can't compare the two occupations.
